As the maxim goes, "Save the best for last." This is why we're saving this blog post as the finale. In this article, we'll go over how you can help local animal shelters and rescue groups in your very own way. Doing so isn't only about adopting dogs, cats or other pets. There are plenty of other ways you can help out and be involved wherever you may be in the country!
If you're still below 18 years of age and you are not allowed to initiate the adoption process by yourself, you can still help out at local shelters and rescues by volunteering. Shelters and rescues are often short-staffed and underfunded. They usually cannot afford to hire more people to help take care of the animals even if they want to.
If you're young and really love animals, but cannot adopt a furry friend, then volunteering is the way to go. There are many benefits to volunteering, too. Besides spending time with a lot of adoptable pets, you'll also learn heaps of valuable lessons while you're at it (definitely an awesome touch to your future resume). Below are just a few things you can volunteer for:
Cleaning kennels
Feeding and training dogs and cats
Bathing and grooming animals
Dog walking or petting cats
Playing with animals
Due to a lack of funding, shelters, and rescues may not always be able to hire the services offered by professionals. Below are just some of the things you can include in your checklist when volunteering at your local adoption center or rescue groups:
If you’re a photographer, take professional-grade animal photos for free. Professionally-taken photos can help make dogs and cats more adoptable. In return, you can add these images to your portfolio or add your watermark to them for some free advertising.
If you’re a veterinarian, give free checkups or free surgery. Most potential pet parents search for a healthy animal when they adopt a pet. You can significantly change the life of an abandoned puppy or kitten when you help them become more appealing health-wise to adopters.
If you’re a writer, create one or two articles per month for the rescue’s or shelter’s use. Most shelters and rescues have a Facebook page and a website these days. By donating a blog post or two, you can help increase your network online and social media presence.
Visit your local rescue group and you'll discover that there is always a roof needing to be fixed, pipes to replace, walls to paint, and a lot of other handyman types of tasks that need to be done. Volunteering to do these things can help them save a lot of money, which can be used to buy food and medicines for dogs, cats, and other pets in need.
Do you have lots of Instagram followers and Facebook friends? In lieu of adopting dogs, cats and other pets, you can easily help out by utilizing your social media accounts. Simply log or sign in and click like or share whenever your local shelter or local rescue posts something new.
When you share an article (like this one) on social media, you're helping people who search for adoption information while also spreading the word on how to get the right pet.
So many people may not be aware of how truly helpful donating a few dollars can be. This is why it's important to help locally because you can see first-hand the real conditions at the shelter or rescue and how funds are being used.
If you are not comfortable about simply handing over your cash, you can always buy supplies. A cool bonus: in some states or countries, this is tax-deductible too!
We'd also like to extend our gratitude to the hundreds of organizations that generously participated in our surveys and interviews. You can check them out to adopt a pet, too! They can help you find your new best friend. Take a look below and see which one is in your location:
