The 8 Symptoms of Entropion in Dogs You Need to Know

Apr 7, 2023by Suzie Cyrenne

Entropion in dogs is deemed as the most common health issue when your canine family member’s eyelids are concerned. In this blog post, I will walk you through what dog entropion is as well as the key indicators that you need to take note of.

What is Entropion in Dogs?

Dog entropion is the condition where your canine family member develops an inverted eyelid. While this health problem usually affects one eyelid, there are cases where both eyelids become distressed and damaged.

It is still not clear what really sets off entropion in dogs because it can stem from either a genetic origin or an adverse effect of another illness. Although all dogs can be vulnerable to entropion, this condition is quite prevalent among toy breeds, giant breeds, and short-nosed breeds due to the formation of their skulls and ocular ligaments.

Here is a quick list of certain breeds prone to entropion in dogs:

On the other hand, dog entropion can also be triggered by secondary causes such as infection in and around the eyes, damaged optic nerve, as well as scarring of the eyelids. Surprisingly, extreme weight loss is also believed to bring about canine entropion since it can have a significant effect on a dog’s facial folds and position of the eyes.

What’s really tricky about spotting entropion in dogs is that its indicators are remarkably similar to other canine eye health issues. But the thing is there are some telltale signs to pay attention to, which I’m going to guide you through in this part of the post.

Symptom #1: Constant rubbing and pawing at the eyes

One of the first things you will notice when your canine family member is going through entropion is he will be constantly rubbing and pawing at his eyes. Your pet is doing this with the expectation of relieving the uncomfortable sensations that he may be in.

Sadly, this frequent pawing and rubbing will also eventually lead to other adverse effects like reddening of the eyes as well as facial swelling.

Symptom #2: Unexpected squinting

When your dog is experiencing entropion, his lower eyelid is pushed inward and forces his eyeball to get in contact with his eyelashes. Although this will only give him a slight discomfort at first, it will eventually become really irritating and painful for your dog.

In the hopes of relieving the serious pain and discomfort, your canine family member will appear to squint as he tries to minimize the contact between his eyeball and eyelashes.

Symptom #3: Excessive blinking

Another indicator that your dog may have entropion in canines is excessive blinking. Your pet may be doing this for two reasons: first, to find relief from the discomfort, and second, to try and remove the usually crusty mucus that may have formed in and around his eyes.

Symptom #4: Teary most of the time

If we’re being honest, dogs suffering from entropion can be in extreme pain most of the time. And it’s not uncommon that they will show their extreme discomfort through crying. There are even dogs that moan and whimper continuously during this health issue.

Symptom #5: Sudden and frequent eye discharge

Besides tears, your canine family member’s eyes will also be subjected to different types of discharge such as mucus during entropion in dogs. These different types of discharge will eventually gather on the outer parts of the affected eye and form a crusty layer, which can be very uncomfortable for your pet.

Additionally, these various discharges tend to be quite viscous and will have a greenish or yellowish hue. Wiping them off with a moist towel before they completely harden is a must.

Symptom #6: Swelling in and around the eyes

Akin to other types of inflammations, entropion in dogs typically causes swelling and may even give your pet’s eyes a somewhat puffed up look. The swelling can become so severe in some cases that your dog’s eye sockets may appear abnormal.

Symptom #7: Sore eyes

Your dog could be in for sore eyes sooner or later when he is suffering from entropion in canines. This is because the continuous contact between his eyeball and eyelashes will irritate the eyes and will almost always cause conjunctivitis.

It is important to take note that this type of conjunctivitis is not going to be infectious since it is caused by the friction between your pet’s eyeball and eyelashes and not by some viral or bacterial contamination.

Symptom #8: Corneal ulcers

A corneal ulcer is perhaps the most significant—not to mention the most serious—among all symptoms of dog entropion. These ulcers are formed when the cornea develops nicks and cuts due to the constant friction between your pet’s eyeball and eyelashes.

Instead of healing properly, these nicks and cuts just become continuously irritated and will end up setting off a corneal ulcer if not given the proper care and attention.
