What is urinary incontinence after surgery in animals?

Urinary incontinence that occurs after surgery results in involuntary urine loss, most often caused by weakness of the internal sphincter of the urinary tract. Weakness of the internal urethra generally occurs more frequently in female dogs, between 2 and 3 years after they were sterilized.

Before talking about urinary incontinence that occurs as a result of a surgical operation, we will make sure that it’s not a problem of cleanliness, and rule out other causes that can lead to incontinence in animals but which does not result from surgery: the animal's age, a congenital malformation of its urinary tract (e.g. ectopic ureter), or a neurological condition that can hinder the proper functioning of the muscles of the urinary tract.

What are the symptoms of urinary incontinence after surgery in animals?

  • Urine loss – continuous stream
  • Urine loss – dripping

Urine loss occurs especially when the animal is lying down or when it’s excited.
